HTV or heat transfer vinyl is a polyurethane material which is a special type of heat transfer vinyl. Can be applied to specific fabrics to create text, designs and promotional items. This material is used to decorate clothing, bags and other soft goods. Consists of an adhesive front and back (called a backing or backing). It is available in roll or sheet form with adhesive on the back. For example, it can be easily cut with a knife, peeled (or weeded) with a weeding tool, and unlike sticky vinyl, HTV is printed onto items using heat and pressure. What can you use HTV for?

Because of the way HTV is applied, you can use it on fabrics and materials that can withstand the heat and pressure needed to transfer for proper adhesion. For fabrics and clothing, these temperatures are typically between 120 and 150 degrees Celsius. The product (also called the substrate) must be able to withstand the pressure and heat of an iron or heat press.

You can easily print HTV on items like polo shirts, t-shirts, hats, jeans, bags, jackets, bags, jumpsuits, ties, sheets, scarves, aprons, and canvas.

Every HTV manufacturer lists the products available for each type of vinyl. Fabrics such as cotton, cotton/polyester blends, polyester and canvas work well with HTV. Some types of HTV can also be used with nylon and leather. However, products such as paper and plastic do not work well because they cannot absorb the heat required to bond vinyl to a substrate. It is very important to ensure that the correct type of HTV and the correct material are used.

How to use htv vinyl?

1. Prepare cutting files, mirror your design

A cutout file is a design you want to cut out and put on a shirt or other surface (the most common type of cutout file is probably SVG, you can download our free SVG file). Make sure to mirror your design before hitting cut. It will transfer backwards from what you cut. Otherwise, your design will go backwards when you put it on your shirt.

Use a cutter to cut files

After cutting out the design, the next step is called "weed". Vinyl Weeding tools can be used to help. Once you find the cut line, use a hook or other weeding tool to grab one of the edges and lift the excess vinyl from the carrier board. You can remove the vinyl from around the design first, then remove the debris from the interior letters and other parts of the design.

4. Iron/ heat press

5. Cool peel

After you have heated and pressurized each part of the design, let it cool for a few minutes and then you can slowly start peeling off the carrier sheet. Allow adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours before cleaning. After curing, it can be washed and dried. For best results, wash inside out in cold water, then hang to dry or tumble dry on low.
