If you have ever tried to make a DIY wood sign by applying a permanent adhesive vinyl decal to a piece of wood, You may experience some frustration. Sometimes, the texture of the wood may make it difficult to get the htv vinyl to actually stick to the wood.

Some people: Why don't I use adhesive vinyl and use HTV vinyl to make wood signs? What vinyl to use on wood? Using heat transfer vinyl looks very troublesome on wood. Although this is more troublesome than using stickers , in many cases, I actually prefer it. The reasons are as follows:

HTV vinyl is not as glossy as most adhesive vinyls, and the matte surface looks closer to paint and less like a sticker.

More color and style options! If you have a favorite HTV or glitter HTV, you can use it for your wood sign project instead of trying to find a similar color in permanent adhesive vinyl.

HTVRont vinyl is really thin and flexible, so vinyl on wood signs looks almost like paint on wood. You can see in the photo how the iron on vinyl almost melts into the wood.

Heat transfer vinyl on wood is something worth trying! Let’s make some super simple, super cute DIY vinyl on wood signs with HTVRont vinyl!

vinyl on wood

1.You first need to find your cricut wood projects inspiration or decide what you want to create. I decided to grab a spare piece of wood and make a lovely "sunflower" decorative display. And this can be used with any type of wood you place in your home!

2.The next step is to prepare the wood you want. Although unprocessed wood can also be used, it is recommended that you sand the wood before using heat transfer vinyl. This helps to remove or smooth out small fragments and uneven pieces on the wood to help the HTV adhere better and look smoother on the surface. Compared to using permanent adhesive vinyl, heat transfer vinyl can adhere to rough wood better ! Therefore, if you try to use Siser EasyPSV or Oracal permanent vinyl, but have trouble using it, you may need to change it and then try heat transfer vinyl instead.

3.
Then use your vinyl cutter to cut the vinyl, weed it, and then press htv on wood! For our HTVRont Vinyl, it is recommended that you press it at a temperature of 302 degrees. Fahrenheit for 15 seconds on medium pressure. Just remember: always follow the instructions related to the type of vinyl you are applying to your project, not for what you are applying on. Putting the HTV on wood is not much different from putting it on a shirt. Make sure the surface is flat and adjust the pressure on the heat press accordingly. If you use a hand iron or Cricut Easypress, make sure to put a decent amount of pressure down. Carefully peel off the transparent film. If part of your vinyl has not adhered to the wood, just press it again. That's it! It is very easy to stick iron on vinyl to wood, and you will find yourself using this technique for various projects, not only cricut wood projects.

The process of applying heat transfer vinyl to wood is very similar to the process of applying heat transfer vinyl to T-shirts or other fabric project.

There’s a little difference that Ironing these stuff on wood rather than fabric while making cricut wood projects. The first is that you do not need to preheat the wood with iron. The second is how long to iron. I still need to iron for about one minute before preparing each part. If you iron for too long, you will find it wrinkles due to high temperature, so please check regularly to know when it reaches that temperature. I found that the backing would start to wrinkle before the vinyl, which was a good indicator to stop. Wait for the backing to cool before touching it, otherwise the experience will make your fingers sore.

What does Adhesive Vinyl not Stick to

Fabrics. There is no easy way to use adhesive vinyl to the fabric. Vinyl may fall off during the washing process. If it is used on clothes, it is easy to loosen the vinyl by constant movement while wearing them. So it's best to use heat transfer vinyl to fabric.
