What’s the difference between heat transfer vinyl and adhesive vinyl?

We always see the word heat transfer vinyl. So what’s the difference between these two kinds of vinyl? Heat transfer vinyl( also short as htv, or iron on vinyl.) has a heat-activated back. It needs a heat to stick on the cloth. Adhesive vinyl doesn’t. So htv is best for clothes, while adhesive vinyl for smooth surfaces like glass, plastic, metal, notebook covers, painted wood and even paper. You can use htv to make t-shirts projects, as well as raw wood and other hard surfaces that are not for adhesive vinyl. So how can we tell adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl?

Typically, the adhesive vinyl has a colored vinyl on one side and is backed by a paper carrier sheet, which is most often white. Sometimes, there is a grid on that piece of paper that can be easily cut. You should be able to place your nails between the two layers and peel the vinyl adhesive from the carrier sheet like sticky paper.

On the other hand, heat transfer vinyl has a glossy transparent plastic carrier plate on one side, and a colored matte back on the vinyl on the other side. You should not easily peel off the heat transfer vinyl.

How to apply adhesive vinyl?

To talk about this topic, you have to know the types of adhesive vinyl first.

Permanent: No big secret here, permanent adhesives are designed to stay put. When you want durable sticks, such as car decals, washable mugs and glasses, and outdoor signs, permanent vinyl is very useful. In most cases, permanent vinyl will require a solvent to remove the adhesive. If you’re about to use permanent adhesive vinyl, be sure you really like your projects!

Removable: Removable adhesives can be removed after a reasonable time with little-to-no adhesive residue. Removable vinyl is ideal for applications where you may wish to remove vinyl in the future. Take wall decals, temporary signs and decorations, etc in consideration. Most removable vinyl adhesives can be removed by peeling them off.

In a word, when you are trying to determine which vinyl to use for your project, consider the type of project you are working on. If you are making a glass, you want it to be washable-choose permanent vinyl. If you want to decal on a wall that needs to sag, removable vinyl is a better option.
