Iron On Vinyl FAQs
What is iron-on vinyl?
Iron-on vinyl (HTV) is a specialty craft material with a heat-activated adhesive layer. It is cut into shapes or letters, applied with heat and pressure, and permanently bonds to fabrics like t-shirts, tote bags, and hats to create custom designs.
Is there a difference between vinyl and iron-on vinyl?
Yes, the key difference is the adhesive and purpose:
1. Iron-on vinyl (HTV) has a heat-activated adhesive and is designed specifically for fabrics.
2. Adhesive vinyl (or permanent vinyl) has a pressure-sensitive, sticky backing (like a sticker) and is for hard, smooth surfaces like mugs, walls, laptops, and signs.
You cannot use them interchangeably.
Which side goes down on iron-on vinyl?
The carrier sheet goes up, and the shiny plastic vinyl side goes down onto the fabric. The adhesive layer is on the back of the vinyl, protected by the carrier sheet. After heating, you peel this carrier sheet away to reveal your design.
How to use iron on vinyl?
1. Mirror & Cut: Reverse your design and cut it on your machine.
2. Weed: Remove the excess vinyl you don't want in your final design.
3. Pre-Press: Iron your fabric to remove wrinkles.
4. Apply: Place the design vinyl-side down on the fabric.
5. Press: Cover with a pressing cloth and apply heat with an iron or heat press.
6. Peel: Let it cool completely, then peel off the clear carrier sheet.
How to remove iron on vinyl?
Best Method: Place a thin cloth over the design and press with a warm iron for 15-20 seconds. The heat will reactivate the adhesive, allowing you to peel the vinyl off while it's still warm.
Alternative: Use a garment steamer to heat and loosen the vinyl for removal.
