Welcome to Lesson 4 of the HTVRONT E15 Embroidery Machine tutorial series. In Lesson 3, we completed your first hat embroidery project. Today, we're going back to the foundation and mastering the single most important skill in multi-needle embroidery: threading the upper thread.
Every clean stitch, every even tension, every reliable stitch-out starts here. If the thread isn't routed correctly through each guide, tension disc, and take-up lever, you'll see it immediately in the final result — skipped stitches, thread breaks, bird-nesting, or uneven density. Getting the threading right takes a bit of patience the first time, but once you've done it correctly a few times, it becomes second nature.
In this lesson, we'll walk through the complete upper threading path for the E15 15-needle embroidery machine, step by step, with a photo of each stage. Let's begin.
Before you start threading, take a moment to review the threading path on the machine itself. Every E15 embroidery machine has a printed threading diagram near the thread stand. Following it as you work through each step will keep you from skipping a guide — which is the most common cause of threading problems.
You'll also want the following items ready:
Pro Tip: Thread one needle at a time. Trying to thread multiple needles simultaneously makes it easy to skip a guide or route the thread to the wrong needle position — and those mistakes are much harder to catch later.
Follow these steps in order. The thread path moves from the spool at the top of the machine, through a series of tension discs and guides, and finally down to the needle.
Place the new thread spool upright on the spool holder.
Pull a length of thread from the spool and pass it through the Thread Guide at the top of the thread stand.
Follow the numbered guides printed on the thread stand. Each needle position has its own numbered path — make sure your thread follows the path that matches the needle you're loading.
Snap the thread into the first thread guide tension disc slot from the left.
Take the threading wire from the Tool Kit and use it to guide the thread through the enclosed thread guide tube. This is the step where the threading wire is essential — the tube is too narrow to feed the thread by hand.
Note: If the thread won't pass through the guide tube smoothly, don't force it. Pull the threading wire back out, check that the thread isn't twisted, and try again. Forcing a tangled thread through can damage the tube.
Snap the thread into the second thread guide tension disc slot from the left.
From the right side, wrap the thread clockwise around the thread break detection wheel once. This wheel monitors whether the thread is feeding properly — if a thread breaks during stitching, the wheel stops rotating and the machine pauses.
Then wrap the thread clockwise around the thread tension knob once. This is where the primary upper thread tension is set.
After that, bring the thread back to the check spring. Hook it into place, and pull it downward. The check spring keeps the thread under consistent tension as the needle moves up and down.
Pass the thread through the two thread guide holes on the upper guide bracket.
Guide the thread down through the lower guide hole.
Pass the thread through Hole 1 between the metal guide rod, then back through Hole 2.
From the right side, pass the thread through the take-up lever. Then down through Hole 3. The take-up lever is what controls thread length during each stitch cycle.
Gently lift the last thread retainer and guide the thread into the slot.
Thread the needle. Leave a 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inch) thread tail, and secure it under the thread holder spring.
Pro Tip: If the thread tail is too short, it can slip out of the needle eye during the first few stitches. If it's too long, it can catch on the presser foot or fabric. The 3–4 cm length is the sweet spot — long enough to stay secure, short enough to stay out of the way.
After threading, perform a final check before starting embroidery. These quick verifications catch the most common threading mistakes before they waste thread, fabric, or time.

Getting the path right the first time saves you from the frustrating troubleshooting that follows a skipped guide or a crossed tension disc.

With 15 needles, each holds its own color, so you can run multi-color designs without re-threading between color changes. Re-threading is only needed when a spool runs out, when you want to change the color in a specific needle position, or when a thread breaks and needs to be re-threaded. In normal use, a well-threaded machine can go many projects before you need to touch the threading again.
Skipping a guide usually shows up as tension problems during stitching. Depending on which guide you miss, you might see loose stitches, tight stitches, thread breaks, or bird-nesting under the fabric. The tension discs and check spring control how much resistance the thread feels as it feeds — if the thread bypasses them, tension becomes inconsistent and the machine can't regulate it. This is why the numbered path exists: following it exactly ensures every thread passes through the same guides in the same order.
Yes — the threading path is identical for every needle position. The only difference is that each needle has its own numbered guide on the thread stand. Follow the same sequence of guides, tension discs, and take-up levers for each thread, but make sure each thread follows the numbered path that matches its needle position. Once you've threaded one needle, you've learned the technique for all 15.
Gently pull the wire back out and check for obstructions. Do not force it — the guide tube is thin and can be damaged by excessive pressure. Once the wire is out, inspect the tube opening for lint or thread debris that may have blocked it. Trim the end of the thread to a clean, angled cut so it feeds smoothly through the tube on the next attempt.
The most common causes are a skipped guide, incorrect tension disc engagement, or a needle that's been installed incorrectly. Start by checking that the thread passes through both tension discs and the check spring. Then verify the needle is fully seated and facing the correct direction. If the problem persists, check the needle tip for damage — a bent or burred needle will shred the thread on every pass. Finally, confirm that the thread isn't twisted or caught on the spool edge.
Yes — upper tension often needs adjustment based on fabric weight and thread type. Heavier fabrics like denim or canvas typically require slightly higher tension, while delicate fabrics like lightweight cotton or performance knits need lower tension. The upper tension knob on the E15 allows fine adjustment.
