Welcome to Lesson 9 of the HTVRONT E15 Embroidery Machine tutorial series. In Lesson 8, we covered how to import embroidery designs from IdeaStudio. Today, we're focusing on a routine maintenance skill every E15 owner will need sooner or later: replacing the needle.
Needles are the most frequently replaced component on any embroidery machine. They wear down with use, get bent by accidents, and can develop burrs that snag and shred thread. A damaged needle is one of the most common causes of skipped stitches, thread breaks, and poor embroidery quality — but replacing it takes only a few minutes when you know the correct procedure.
In this lesson, we'll walk through the complete needle replacement process on the E15 15-needle embroidery machine, from inspecting the needle bar to testing your first stitch with the new needle. Let's get started.
A dull or damaged needle is one of the most overlooked causes of embroidery problems. Because the needle is small and moves quickly, it's easy to forget that it's a wear item — like a blade that gradually dulls with use. But the impact of a bad needle shows up immediately in the quality of your stitching.
Replace the needle whenever you notice any of the following:
How often should you replace the needle? As a general guideline, replace the needle after every 8–10 hours of stitching, or sooner if you notice any of the symptoms above. If you're working with dense fabrics like denim, canvas, or leather, replace more frequently — hard fabrics wear needles faster.
Before you start replacing the needle, take a moment to inspect the needle bar area. This is the perfect opportunity to catch any other problems that could be affecting stitch quality — debris buildup, worn parts, or hidden damage.

Finally, inspect the needle plate for any debris or damage.
Pro Tip: If you see lint, thread fragments, or fabric debris in any of these areas, clean them out with a small brush before proceeding. Clean components perform better and last longer — and a clean needle plate also gives you a clear view of what's actually happening during stitching.
For easier needle replacement, set the main shaft to the 100° stop position first. This positions the needle bar at a height that makes the needle clamp screw easy to reach with your screwdriver.
If needed, tap the 100° icon on the touchscreen to adjust the position.
Next, prepare the following tools from the Tool Kit.
Turn off the machine before replacing the needle. This is a safety step that should never be skipped — even if you've replaced needles many times before.
Remove the thread from the needle eye.
Hold the needle with the needle-nose pliers, then turn the flat-head screwdriver counterclockwise to loosen the needle clamp screw.
⚠️ Important: Do not loosen the screw too much, or the presser foot may fall off. One full turn is typically enough to release the needle from the clamp. Any further turning risks loosening the presser foot assembly.

Once the screw is loose, gently pull the old needle downward and remove it from the clamp. Set it aside — if it's not visibly damaged, you can keep it as a backup. If it's bent, burred, or broken, dispose of it safely.
Install the new needle with the long groove facing the front of the machine. This orientation is critical — the long groove is where the thread travels down to the needle eye, and it needs to face the same direction as the thread path from above.
Push the needle all the way up into the clamp, then turn the needle clamp screw clockwise to secure it.
⚠️ Critical installation note: Fully insert the needle before tightening the screw. Improper installation may cause thread breaks, skipped stitches, needle breakage, or machine damage. If the needle isn't fully seated, the timing between the needle and rotary hook will be off — and that affects every stitch the machine makes.
Then, gently move the needle to make sure it is secure. A properly installed needle should not shift, wobble, or turn when you touch it lightly.
Finally, pass the thread through the needle eye. If you're reusing the same thread, you can simply re-thread it through the new needle's eye. If you're switching to a different thread color, this is also the moment to do that.
Leave a 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inch) thread tail and secure it under the thread holder spring — same as you learned in Lesson 4.
After replacing the needle, test embroidery at a lower speed (500 SPM) before starting your next project. This gives you a chance to confirm the new needle is installed correctly and stitching properly — without risking a real project on unverified settings.
During the test stitch-out, watch for:
What to do if the test doesn't look right: Turn off the machine, re-check that the needle is fully seated and the long groove faces forward, then re-run the test. If problems persist, check the needle plate for damage and verify the bobbin thread is properly installed. In most cases, a tension or threading issue masquerades as a needle problem.

Keep a small supply of replacement needles on hand — they're inexpensive and having them ready means you can swap out a damaged needle immediately rather than interrupting a production session. Most E15 owners keep needles in at least two sizes: a standard size for everyday apparel work and a heavier size for denim, canvas, and other dense fabrics.

Common sizes include 75/11 for lightweight fabrics, 80/12 for medium-weight fabrics, and 90/14 for heavy fabrics. For best results, use quality embroidery needles made specifically for machine embroidery rather than general-purpose sewing needles.
Loosening the screw more than one full turn risks loosening the presser foot assembly, which is attached to the same needle bar mechanism. If the presser foot falls off, it can be difficult to reattach correctly and may affect the timing of the entire needle assembly. One full turn is enough to release the needle from the clamp without disturbing the surrounding components. If the needle still doesn't release after one turn, check for a burr or debris caught in the clamp before loosening further.
First, re-check the needle installation: make sure it's fully seated with the long groove facing forward and the clamp screw is tight. If the needle is installed correctly and problems persist, check the following: (1) the needle isn't bent — roll it on a flat surface to verify, (2) the needle size is appropriate for the fabric, (3) the thread is properly routed through all the guides from Lessons 4 and 6, (4) the bobbin tension is correct per Lesson 5. In most cases, what looks like a needle problem turns out to be a threading or tension issue.
Yes — a worn or damaged needle can cause damage in several ways. A dull needle requires more force to penetrate fabric, which stresses the needle bar mechanism. A bent needle can strike the needle plate, damaging the tip and potentially the plate itself. A burred needle can shred the thread and leave debris in the bobbin area.
