The technical term for Cricut Maker is "Electronic Die Cutter". For artisans, die cutting is the process of cutting perfect, uniform shapes from a variety of materials such as vinyl, paper, fabric, plastic or particleboard. You may remember the old analog tech from the school teacher's studio: a large metal contraption with a swinging arm - basically a cut-out cookie cutter. Remember all those little paper footballs glued to your locker during your high school spirit week? Entirely made by hand die cutter. There are also bulky handheld versions of die cutters used by scrapbookers, home educators, and other craftsmen.

What is Cricut Maker?

The Cricut Maker is an electronic die cutter connected to a tablet, phone or laptop that can cut, score, emboss and engrave hundreds of materials up to 2.4mm thick - including paper, fabric, vinyl, Cardboard, wax paper, aluminum foil and balsa.

Cricut Design Space

Cricut's proprietary software, Cricut Design Space, allows you to create your projects using a variety of fonts, images, and materials. Some fonts and images available by default are free, but users can subscribe to the Cricut Access library. For around $10 per month, users can access an entire library of over 100,000 images and 400+ fonts.

However, you are not limited to 100,000 images. Design Space can handle any vector file, so users with graphic design skills can do more with vector software programs like Adobe Illustrator (subscription-based) or Vectornator (open source). If you can create it and convert it to a vector, Maker will probably cut or draw it.

Design Space runs on your tablet, computer or phone and sends messages to Maker via Bluetooth or USB. I prefer to use the Design Space on my laptop because I prefer a bigger screen.

Step 3: Process the image in the Cricut Design Space

Resize the image. Cricut has nine different shape options to choose from. You can also upload your own images to Design Space. Add various shapes. Don't forget to unlock scales to create various rectangles. Select the elements you want to align and use different options depending on how you want to align. In most cases, you will use Center and Distribute Horizontally or Vertically. Add shapes of different sizes and let your imagination fly! Your stickers will end up being cute.

After selecting the shape, change the fill you want to print, then choose the desired color or pattern for the shape. To add color to the sticker, you can choose a solid color background or a pattern.

Select the element you want to add color to, then change the color box next to the Actions setting in the top panel of the canvas area.

To change the color of multiple shapes at the same time, always hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and click all the elements you want to edit. This also applies to patterns.

The pattern is a background that can be used for stickers or other "print and cut" projects. There are hundreds for you to choose from. If you want to add a pattern, change the action to "Standard Print Then Cut", then click the color box next to "Action" and select "Pattern" from the "Print Type" drop-down menu.

You can also add text and images. To add text, click the Text button on the left panel of the canvas. After adding colors and patterns to the sticker, go ahead and enter the text you want to use.

You can personalize the text to your liking and life in general, something you can never get or buy in a normal store.

After entering the text, place it on the desired shape.

It's time to add images to your stickers! (click the image button located on the left panel of the canvas)

Remember that when working with images, they are sometimes grouped and used in different colors and sizes. You need to group them to edit the color and size of each small element. You may also need to change the scale to fit your label stock.

You can only print designs up to 9.25 x 6.75 inches before printing. So please check the dimensions before sending the item for cropping, otherwise you will get a warning that the image is too large.

Once you're done designing, make sure each element's padding is set to "Print". Then, select the entire design and click the Plane option at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Repeat until you get all the designs you need! Again, don't forget to flatten each design!

You can duplicate the design on the canvas to increase the number.

Step 4: Cutting

When you're ready to cut, click the "Make" button in the upper right corner and load the printable sticker into the printer.

First, click Send to Printer, then the print settings box will pop up.

Select your printer, keep all default settings, and leave Print. When done, a separate print dialog will usually pop up behind the Design Space window. Check all print settings here!

If you have a Cricut Maker, browse through all the materials and enter "stickers" to narrow your search. If you have Cricut Explore, move the smart settings dial on the Cricut Machine and browse for footage in the design space, then select the sticker you want to use.

Set your material and pressure; place the printer paper on the LightGrip pad; load it into your machine and cut.
